After class I have come to find that patterns are all around us in our everyday lives. From the patterns on a tile floor to the patterns coming form the center of a flower. From trying to understand these I have come to see how math can be used not only in the classroom but in real life. By understanding this I will be able to use patterns as a teacher in the classroom to help my students visually understand important math topics.
Here are examples of patterns that I found around that demonstrate unique kinds of patterns. Patterns are repeating designs that together form images. The first picture was the pattern on a cushion made of a continuos pattern whereas the other picture is a table cloth that has many different repeating patterns. By seeing some of these examples students can relate math to objects or things in their own lives.
From experimenting with patterns in class I have been able to see how they are all around us and used in so many things. I have researched multiple ways to teach patterns to elementary students. For one example, I found the idea to use bingo markers to make a set pattern for the kids to follow. Then they would be able to expand the pattern and also make their own for others to follow. Students would learn the concept of patterns and be able to understand real applications of patterns. As a teacher I would discuss functions of patterns in our everyday lives.
